How to Become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepare, administer and measure radioactive isotopes in studies under the direction of a physician.
Employment is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012.
Demand for services will be spurred by an increase in the number of middle-aged and older persons, who are the primary users of these nuclear medicine diagnostic tests.
Here's what you need to know:
1) What is a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?
2) Requirements for the career
3) Certification
4) Salary Potential
5) Schools
1) What is a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?
Under the direction of a physician, Nuclear medicine technologists administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients and then monitor the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the drugs localize.
Abnormal areas show higher or lower-than-expected concentrations of radioactivity.
After explaining test procedures to patients, they prepare a dosage of the radioactive materials and administer it by mouth, injection or other means.
Nuclear medicine technologists operate cameras that detect and map the radioactive drug in a patient?s body to create diagnostic images.
They position patients and start a gamma scintillation camera, or ?scanner,? which creates images of the distribution of a radiopharmaceutical as it localizes in, and emits signals from, the patient?s body.
The images are produced on a computer screen or on film for a physician to interpret.
2) Career Requirements
Below are some career requirements:
- Completion of a Nuclear medicine technology program, either a 2-year certificate program, a 2-year associate degree program or a 4-year bachelor?s degree program
- Program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology is preferable
- Certification is available from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
- Many states require certification or licensure
- Should possess mechanical ability and manual dexterity.
- Should be sensitive to patients? physical and psychological needs.
- Must be detail oriented, able to follow instructions and a team player
3) Certification
To become ARRT-certified, you've to meet their 3 basic requirements - ethical behavior, successful completion of an approved education program and pass an examination developed and administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
You can also choose to become a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CMT) which is offered by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
You will have to take and pass the NMTCB Certification Examination.
4) Salary Potential
Earnings vary by geographic location, employment setting, and years of experience.
The median annual salary of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist is approximately $48,000 to $66,000.
Salaries range from about $35,000 per year to over $68,000 per year.
5) Nuclear Medicine Technologist Schools
The Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT) and its sponsoring organizations, the American College of Radiology, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine (Technologist Section), cooperate to establish, maintain and promote appropriate standards of quality for postsecondary educational programs in nuclear medicine technology to provide skilled, professional services to the patients served.
Educational programs, which meet or exceed these minimum standards, are granted an accreditation status by the JRCNMT, providing public recognition of such achievement.
If accreditation is important to you, please verify the status of the school prior to enrolling.
