Medical assistants work in the offices of doctors, dentists, optometrist, podiatrists, chiropractors and other medical facilities.

1) What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants perform various administrative and clinical tasks.

Administrative tasks may include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients? medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping.

Clinical duties vary according to State law. They may include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination.

Medical assistants also collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments.

They instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, authorize drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, draw blood, prepare patients for x rays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures and change dressings.

Medical assistants also may arrange examining-room instruments and equipment, purchase and maintain supplies and equipment, and keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean.

To earn the CMA credential, you must enroll in a medical assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

You will attain academic and clinical training in a variety of areas such as:

Once you graduate from the program you must successfully take and pass the AAMA CMA Certification Examination.

You must renew the credential every 5 years.

The average annual salary of a Medical Assistant is approximately $24,000.

Salaries range from about $20,000/year to over $34,000 per year.

 

5) Medical Assistant Schools

As mentioned earlier, you must graduate from a program accredited by either the CAAHEP or ABHES to be eligible to apply for the CMA certification.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is the largest programmatic/specialized accreditor in the health sciences field.

CAAHEP reviews and assesses the quality of institutions, programs and services to make sure that they meet the required standards.
