1) What is a Medical Records and Health Information Technician?
Every time a patient sees a doctor or receives medical care, a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions and treatment outcomes.
This record includes the patient's medical history, results of examinations, reports of x rays and laboratory tests, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
Medical records and health information technicians ensures the quality of medical records by verifying the completeness, accuracy and property entry into computer systems.
Technicians begin to assemble patients? health information by first making sure their initial medical charts are complete.
They ensure that all forms are completed and properly identified and signed, and that all necessary information is in the computer.
They regularly communicate with physicians or other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.
2) Requirements
Here are some basic requirements:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete a 2-year associate degree program, preferably at a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) of the American Medical Association
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) is desirable.

Certification is a process by which a nongovernmental agency or association recognizes the competency of individuals who have met certain qualifications as determined by the agency or association.

There are 2 certifications offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) :
1) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
This credential requires a 2-year associate's degree and passing the RHIT certification exam.
To take the examination, a person must graduate from a 2-year
associate degree program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for
Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
2) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
This credential requires a bachelor's degree and successful performance on the RHIA certification exam.
To take the examination, you must have a bachelor's degree from a school
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and
Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
4) Salary Potential
Salaries vary depending on location and size of the business and the experience level of the individual.
The median annual salary for a Health Information Technician is approximately $24,000 per year.
Salaries range from $16,000 to over $38,000 per year.
5) Health Information Technician Schools
